To support the needs of customers on the Northern Beaches and Lower North Shore, Transport for NSW has added 2000 extra weekly bus services.  These have included buses every 10 minutes on key routes as part of an all-day frequent network operating seven days a week, and improvements to other routes including the new 172X from Warringah Mall to the city via North Balgowlah.

Following feedback from the community, Transport for NSW  reviewed the new routes and proposing some adjustments to the existing service that maintains customer access to bus services where it is needed. This review also included meeting with members of the North Balgowlah community who had concerns regarding the frequency of the new 172X (Warringah Mall to the city via North Balgowlah) in and around Urunga Street.

What option is being proposed?

The proposed changes would result in a maximum of five 172x services operating via the Urunga Street area (comprising services in both directions) in the busiest hour of both the morning and afternoon peak periods, which is a substantial reduction from the current timetable. During the 'school peak' hour of 3pm to 4pm, an additional 172x service would operate via Urunga Street providing three inbound and three outbound services to cater for student travel needs delivered by the 172x service.

To help achieve this reduction, two 172X services to the city during the busiest part of the morning peak would commence from Wakehurst Parkway. The previous 168X route would also be reintroduced during peak periods, operating via Bangaroo Street and Brook Road.

In addition on the 172x routes that travel through Urunga Street we will be prioritising rigid over the bendy bus option.

Benefits of this approach include:

  • Restoring the the 168X would provide faster journeys for North Balgowlah customers, while helping reduce the number of buses operating via Urunga Street.
  • Importantly, the combined 168X and 172X services would maintain the overall service levels to and from the city for North Balgowlah and Seaforth customers. 

Frequencies on Urunga Street

There will be a maximum of five 172X buses operating via Urunga Street in the busiest one hour of both the morning (7-8am) and afternoon (6-7pm) in both directions.
Under the proposed option, three inbound and two outbound 172X services would operate via Urunga Street for a total of five services in both directions between 7am and 8am.
During 6-7pm two inbound and three outbound 172X services would operate via Urunga Street for a total of five services in both directions between 6pm and 7pm.
During the ‘school peak’ hour of 3pm to 4pm, despite it not being busier for the road network generally, an additional 172X service would operator via Urunga Street providing three inbound and three outbound services to cater for student travel needs delivered by the 172X service.

This is on top of a school route (730n) which travels along Urunga St in the hour between 7-8am and well as two school routes (730n and 614n) which travel along Urunga St in the hour between 3-4pm.

We want to get the balance right. It’s important we respond to community concerns while also ensuring those customers who rely on the 172X as an option to get to the city, particularly in the morning peak. We also need to ensure we are providing enough capacity in the area for school student travel.
