Hundreds of extra services to keep customers moving during Sydney Metro work over Christmas and New Year

Commuters on the T3 Bankstown and T4 Eastern Suburbs lines are being urged to plan ahead with temporary public transport changes in place over Christmas and into the New Year.

From Sunday 26 December 2021 until Sunday 9 January 2022, stations on the T3 Bankstown Line between Central and Birrong will be closed. From Sunday 26 December 2021 until Tuesday 28 December 2021, stations on the T4 Illawarra Line between Sydenham and Central will also close.

Transport for NSW Chief Operations Officer Howard Collins said frequent bus and additional train services will ensure commuters can continue to move around the network as this essential work is carried out to deliver the Sydney Metro.

“We’ve developed a robust plan based on the latest travel data, including additional buses running hundreds of extra services. We’re also rerouting and adding more train services to the network, with dozens of extra trains per day on the T2, T4 and T8 lines,” Mr Collins said.

“There will be bus marshals and customer service staff assisting customers at key stations, as well as temporary parking changes to accommodate the extra bus services.

“We chose the Christmas holiday period when there are fewer people travelling to limit impacts on commuters. This is an exciting period for the construction of Sydney Metro, and we’re asking for people to allow for extra travel time, travel outside of peaks, and consider alternative arrangements if they can.”

Major work between Sydenham and Bankstown will upgrade the more than 125-year-old T3 Bankstown Line to modern metro rail standards. Work during this shutdown period includes:

  • Rebuilding platforms at multiple stations to make them level with trains;
  • Installation of new lift structures and staircases at Hurlstone Park, Punchbowl and Canterbury;
  • Upgrading both entry ramps at Wiley Park;
  • Upgrades to the concourse precincts and installing platform furniture;
  • Installing anti-throw screens at Illawarra Road bridge over the railway alignment between Sydenham and Bankstown;
  • New trackside cabling and equipment; and
  • Electricity substation work.
