New App To Help Customers Plan, Book And Pay For Connected Journeys

Customers across Sydney will soon have a chance to take part in a ground breaking trial that allows them to plan, book and pay for a range of different transport services – all in the one app.

Transport for NSW Deputy Secretary, Customer Strategy & Technology, Joost de Kock said the new trial will build on the learnings from the recent Opal Digital Card trial which is scheduled to end in December.

“We’d like to thank our customers for taking part in the successful 12 month trial, which saw over 300,000 trips taken using the Opal Digital Card. We received feedback from our customers that they loved the convenience of a digital wallet and this will be a key feature of our new trial,” Mr de Kock said.

Opal Digital Card trial customers will still be able to use their smart phone or device on the Opal network if they have a contactless payment card within a digital wallet.

The new trial will allow up to 10,000 participants to use the app’s integrated journey planner and choose from a selection of multi-modal subscription style bundles spanning both public and private modes of transport.

“Whether you ride to the station and catch a train to work or need to book a rideshare home after a night out, the app will be a one-stop-shop for all your transport needs. Details of the new trial will be announced early in 2022,” Mr de Kock said.

“We’d also like to thank our customers across NSW for being CovidSafe and adopting contactless payments. Our data shows that the proportion of our adult customers opting to use contactless payments has doubled from 17% before Covid to 34% now. More than half of all contactless transactions are also being made via a digital wallet.”
