Pedestrians urged to look both ways as Parramatta’s George Street becomes two-way

Pedestrians in Parramatta are urged to be aware and look both ways before crossing when George Street becomes a two-way road this month. The change is part of the Parramatta Light Rail program of works to increase road capacity and help traffic flow more efficiently.

From 10pm on Friday 29 November, George Street - between O’Connell Street and the Harris/MacArthur Street intersection - will be converted to two-way traffic, moving motorists efficiently through the heart of Parramatta and redistributing traffic volumes across the local road network.

Transport for NSW Coordinator General Marg Prendergast said the traffic change will coincide with a speed limit reduction to 40km/h in this part of Parramatta, to make it safer for both motorists and pedestrians to move around as the suburb grows.

“George Street is a busy pedestrian area with many office and retail buildings, so we are urging pedestrians and motorists to be mindful of the changes and to take extra care,” Ms Prendergast said.

“We need people to be actively thinking about their safety and that of others – pedestrians should be vigilant, put away distractions and look right and left when crossing George Street, while motorists should follow signs and directions from traffic controllers and police.”

A pedestrian safety campaign will include footpath decals around key intersections to make sure people stop and look both ways before they step out to cross the street; signage; and staff dressed in pink to assist customers and raise awareness about the changes.

“Along with the Parramatta Light Rail, there is a significant amount of development set to revitalise Parramatta so we are focused on facilitating the safe and efficient movement of all road users in and around this booming precinct,” Ms Prendergast said.

“We know this will be a change for the community who use this road and these crossings every day, which is why we need everyone to be extra mindful around the changed traffic conditions and not rush when getting to their destination,” Ms Prendergast said.

Motorists will start to see traffic and parking changes along George Street, Parramatta, from mid-November. From Friday 22 November, the parking and one lane of traffic along the southern side of George Street will be temporarily removed to allow motorists travelling east to become accustomed to travelling on the northern side of George Street. Traffic controllers and police will be on hand to ensure the motorists and pedestrians can safely travel through George Street.
