Thousands of customers took up the offer of a fare free weekend on the new L2 Randwick Line, marking the historic opening of Sydney’s newest public transport network.
Across opening weekend, 150,000 customers hopped on board with services operating on average every 6-8 minutes after opening at about 10am Saturday 14 December.
Circular Quay was a particularly popular boarding spot for customers, many with youngsters in tow enjoying a Sunday of shopping and sightseeing.
Opening weekend wasn't without challenges, including a medical emergency requiring assistance for a vulnerable passenger, and a tram that lost power later in the day.
With the potential for issues in mind, additional customer resource officers were on the ground, stops were monitored on CCTV and crowd management crews, heavy tows and police were stationed throughout the network.
More than 200,000 km of testing had been carried out on this part of the line, however introducing customers on real journeys presented different challenges.
As capacity grows on the network and customers become more accustomed to the system, journey times will further improve as the L3 Kingsford Line opening approaches in March 2020.
