Upgrades to Warringah Freeway are underway. These works are part of Transport NSW’s improvements to our integrated road and public transport network.
Expect delays on Warringah Freeway over the coming months
Major road works will continue on the Warringah Freeway during 2024. Heavy traffic and long delays are anticipated on Warringah Freeway and surrounding roads. During this time, we strongly recommend that you plan ahead, consider all your travel options and allow extra time to reach your destination.
Consider all your travel options to avoid delays and note that taking a train or ferry may be a faster and smoother ride.
If you need to drive, check Live Traffic for the latest traffic updates before you leave, and try to travel before 7am and after 9am when traffic is lighter. If you can, consider working remotely midweek and coming into the office on Monday or Friday, to avoid the worst delays.
Travelling between North Sydney & surrounds and CBD
- Heading to the CBD from North Sydney? It’s only 3 stops (and 9 minutes) from North Sydney to Town Hall Station on the T1 North Shore or T9 Northern train lines.
- Catch a T1 North Shore or T9 Northern train from St Leonards, Wollstonecraft, Waverton, North Sydney, or Milsons Point stations to Wynyard, Town Hall, Central or Redfern, and then walk or transfer to train, bus or light rail services to reach your destination.
- Consider catching the F4 Pyrmont Bay ferry from McMahons Point or Milsons Point to Circular Quay and then walk or transfer to train or light rail services to reach your destination.
- Consider catching the F5 Neutral Bay ferry from Neutral Bay, or Kirribilli to Circular Quay and then walk or transfer to train, bus or light rail services to reach your destination.
Travelling to the Northern Beaches
- Heading to the Northern Beaches? Skip the hassles of driving through traffic, navigating detours and finding parking. Take the F1 Manly Ferry or B-Line bus instead.
- Bus services including the 199 Palm Beach via Mona Vale and Dee Why connect with ferries at Manly Wharf. From Circular Quay you can walk or transfer to a train, bus, or light rail service.
- Check Park&Ride car parks are available as they are a short walking distance to 199 and B-Line bus stops at Brookvale, Dee Why, Mona Vale, Narrabeen and Warriewood.
- If you’re travelling by car to North Sydney or CBD, consider catching the bus for a smoother journey. Available bus services include B1, 165X, 168X, 174X, 176X, 177X, 180X, 181X, 190X.
- If you need to drive to Macquarie Park, you may have a better experience travelling via Warringah Road, rather than the M2.
Travelling between Mosman and CBD
- Consider catching the F6 Mosman Bay ferry from Mosman or Cremorne Point to Circular Quay and then walk or transfer to train or light rail services to reach your destination.
Travelling between the Hills District and CBD
- If you drive to North Sydney or the CBD, skip the hassle of driving through traffic, navigating detours and finding parking.
- You can catch Metro services to Epping station followed by a T9 Northern train service to the CBD or continue to Chatswood station and hop on a T1 North Shore or T9 Northern train service to North Sydney or the CBD.
- If you are travelling by car or bus along the M2, we recommend travelling before 7:15am or after 8:45am on weekdays for a better commute.

What is happening?
Significant road works are planned across the next 18 months. The improvements will simplify traffic flows and make it easier for drivers to navigate, as well as create connections to new tunnels as part of the Western Harbour Tunnel projects.
Improvements include:
- upgrades to interchanges at Falcon Street in Cammeray and High Street in North Sydney
- relocation of road and shared user bridges
- connection of the Warringah Freeway to the Western Harbour Tunnel via on and off-ramps
- new and upgraded pedestrian and bike infrastructure
- upgrades and modifications to bus infrastructure
- other operational infrastructure including drainage, utilities, signage, lighting, CCTV and other traffic management systems.
