The region is home to nearly five million people and is projected to grow to eight million over the next 40 years.

To manage the needs of a growing and changing population, Transport for NSW is planning around the concept of a Greater Sydney of three cities:

• The Western Parkland City
  The Central River City
  The Eastern Harbour City.

Each city has its own unique identity as a place, brought to life by the personality and characteristics of its people and its communities, all of which determines and shapes the city need. Transport for NSW is planning around each strategic city centre and will be better able to understand the needs of customers across Sydney.
