Warringah Freeway Upgrade - Plan ahead for major works from Artarmon to North Sydney

Major works will take place on the Warringah Freeway from 10pm Friday 24 May to 4.30am Monday 27 May to allow for the construction of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge at Ridge St, North Sydney.

During the work, a 750-tonne crane will be used to lift one of the bridge girders into place. To safely complete the girder lift, a closure of the southbound lanes of the freeway will be required from midnight to 7am Sunday 26 May. At the same time, both southbound lanes of the Sydney Harbour Tunnel will also be closed, as well as a series of on and off-ramps.

Significant detours will be in place during the period – download the detour map here

Some of the key impacts include:

  • From midnight – 7am Sunday 26 May
    • The Gore Hill Fwy / Warringah Fwy will be closed southbound from the Pacific Hwy, Artarmon to Mount St, North Sydney.  All southbound motorists, including southbound buses from Longueville Rd, Epping Rd and the Lane Cove Tunnel must exit at the Pacific Hwy.
    • Both southbound lanes of the Sydney Harbour Tunnel will also be closed, as well as a series of on-ramps, the Military Rd southbound off-ramp and the Alfred Street North southbound off-ramp.
  • From 10pm Friday 24 May to 4.30am Monday 27 May
    • The Alfred St North southbound off-ramp will be closed.
  • From 9pm Saturday 25 May to 8am Sunday 26 May
    • The Miller St southbound on-ramp will be closed.
  • During these periods, the Gore Hill Freeway/Warringah Freeway will remain open northbound. The Sydney Harbour Bridge will remain open in both directions all weekend. However, when the freeway is closed southbound, motorists must use Pacific Hwy, Berry St, Arthur St and then the on-ramp from Mount St to access the bridge. At all other times, southbound access to the freeway will be maintained.
  • From 10pm Saturday 25 May to 7am Sunday 26 May
    • Special Event Clearways will be in effect southbound on Miller St, North Sydney between Ridge St and Berry St, and northbound on Arthur St between High St and Mount St.
      • Clearways are strict no-parking zones for all vehicle types, and apply even to local residents and businesses with parking permits or TfNSW Mobility Scheme permit holders. If your vehicle is towed, you can search your vehicle registration at the Find My Car website to find its new location, or alternatively call 132 701 to speak to an operator.

Motorists heading through the area during the works are urged to plan ahead and visit livetraffic.com for the latest traffic updates before starting their journey.

Bus passengers should allow extra time. While there will not be any changes to bus stops, there will be bus detours due to the southbound freeway closure.

If you’re heading to Vivid Sydney, leave the car at home and catch public transport. Thousands of additional services will be running throughout the festival.

Travellers heading to Sydney Airport should allow plenty of time and consider catching public transport. The Airport is expected to be busy, and Sydney Gateway work is also in progress.

More work is also scheduled for the June long weekend, Friday 7 June – Tuesday 11 June. We will provide more information soon.
