WestConnex is Australia’s largest road infrastructure project and is a critical part of a broader plan to get Sydney, and Australia, moving again.

Connecting Sydney

WestConnex is a 33km, traffic-light free motorway network that is getting Sydney moving now and into the future.

It is the largest transport infrastructure project in Australia and a critical part of the NSW Government’s integrated transport solution, providing public transport and road infrastructure to keep Sydney moving. It has increased the capacity of the M4 and M5 corridors and provided a vital underground link between the two motorways.

WestConnex is being delivered in four major stages:

Delivered - The M4 Tunnels were completed in July 2019, linking to the widened M4 motorway and Haberfield

DeliveredWestConnex M8, open since July 2020, doubles the capacity of the M5 East via twin 9km tunnels

Delivered - The new extensions of the M4 and M8 opened in January 2023, linking the M4 at Haberfield with the M8 at St Peters.

Delivered – The Rozelle Interchange connects the M4-M5 Link to the Anzac and Iron Cove bridges, and the future Western Harbour Tunnel and Beaches Link. The Rozelle Interchange is being built almost entirely underground, freeing up space for a new 10ha regional park.

WestConnex has:

  • widened the M4 between Parramatta and Homebush, creating an even faster way to bypass 28 sets of traffic lights on Parramatta Road.
  • extended the M4, with twin underground tunnels from Homebush to Haberfield.
  • created smoother road surfaces and new access points to the new M4 between Parramatta and Homebush.
  • lengthened the on and off-ramps at the King Georges Road M5 interchange, providing more capacity and reducing congestion for motorists.
  • doubled road capacity along the M5 East corridor with the M8 underground tunnels running between St Peters and Kingsgrove.
  • joined these underground routes together via the M4–M5 Link tunnel to form a seamless motorway without traffic lights.
  • provided a western bypass of the Sydney CBD.

WestConnex will:

  • provide connections to the future Western Harbour Tunnel, Beaches Link, M6 extension and major international gateways at Sydney Airport and Port Botany.
