Keep your cool on our roads these winter holidays

With snow dumps arriving in time for the New South Wales school holidays this weekend, people heading to the slopes are reminded to pack and fit snow chains and drive to the weather conditions.

Transport for NSW Acting Executive Director Customer Coordination Andrew Dalgairns said the late arrival of snow this season means alpine roads are now busy with crowds keen to get the most from the good skiing and boarding conditions.

“The same elements that lead to great conditions on the slopes result in hazards on our roads. As the snow has ramped up our team has seen a jump in incidents,” Mr Dalgairns said.

“Where drivers are coming unstuck is when they rush or aren’t prepared. Most incidents so far this season have been vehicles sliding off the road, but we’ve also already seen cars roll over.

“Too many motorists have been driving without snow chains when they are needed – carry them and know how to use them as they could save your life.”

All two-wheel drive vehicles entering Kosciuszko National Park during the ski season must carry snow chains, and vehicles should not drive faster than 40km/h with chains on.

Four-wheel drives are not required to carry and fit chains, however it is recommended drivers who do not have winter tyres fitted still carry them to improve traction if needed.

“The safest spot to fit chains is at our designated chain bays. We have signs letting motorists know when they need to be chain compliant,” Mr Dalgairns said. 

“We ask everyone heading off across NSW these school holidays to please have patience on our roads. We’re also predicting heavy traffic at other pinch points and want all families to get to and from their winter holiday breaks safely.

Sydney Airport is expected to be very busy, particularly the domestic terminal. If you are catching a flight allow extra travel time or consider catching public transport. 

For road users on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, please be aware maintenance and Warringah Freeway Upgrade works, including lane changes and closures, are taking place from 10pm Friday 30 June. Motorists should be alert and follow directions.
