Plan ahead for the Sydney Marathon

Major road closures will be in place from North Sydney to Moore Park between 3:30am and 3pm on Sunday 17 September while up to 40,000 runners take to the streets in this year's history making Sydney Marathon as an Abbott World Marathon Major Candidate Event.

A record number of participants will start from Bradfield Park, Milsons Point across all four events, including the 42km marathon, 21km half marathon, 10km bridge run and 3.5km family fun run. For maps of the course routes - visit the Sydney Marathon website.

Due to changes to the event course this year, road closures are more significant and travel across the city will be very limited for majority of the day.

Participants are encouraged to leave the car at home and catch public transport with travel on all transport modes covered by your Sydney Marathon registration. Frequent extra trains will run to Milsons Point to get you to the start line. From the finish line plenty of major transport hubs are within short walking distance including Circular Quay, Wynyard and Martin Place.

Major roads will be closed between 3:30am and 3pm in Milsons Point, the Sydney CBD, The Rocks, Millers Point, Barangaroo, Pyrmont, Darlinghurst, Moore Park & Centennial Park.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge, Cahill Expressway and Western Distributor will be closed in both directions from 4am to 10am. The Sydney Harbour Tunnel remains open.

Major roads from the Opera House down to Moore Park will be closed from 4am until 2:30pm/3pm including Macquarie St, College St, Park St, Oxford St and Flinders St.

Motorists will only be able to travel east/west across the course via the Cross City Tunnel which will be toll-free from 5am to 3pm on event day however long delays are expected and motorists should avoid non-essential travel.

Extensive special event clearway parking restrictions will also be in effect on roads along and surrounding the course, check signs carefully to avoid being towed. Visit livetraffic.com for details on road closures, clearways and real-time updates on event day.

Transport services including buses and light rail will be affected by road closures. Light rail in the CBD will not run between Circular Quay and Town Hall from first service until 11am.

Bus services to and from the city, North Sydney, Pyrmont and Moore Park will be diverting from their regular routes while major roads are closed. While the Harbour Bridge is closed, buses will start and end trips either side of the bridge in North Sydney and Town Hall or Wynyard – customers will need to change for a train to continue across the bridge between 4am and 10am. Buses from the east will start and end trips at Kings Cross or Woolloomooloo, passengers from the eastern suburbs are urged to catch trains to the city from Bondi Junction instead.
