With fast and reliable Sydney Metro services now stopping at eight new stations between Chatswood and Sydenham via the CBD, many commuters will find it easier to travel to the office.
Metro now connects more commuters to seamless turn-up-and-go travel between key precincts, including new dedicated stations at Barangaroo and Gadigal (Pitt St), as well as metro stations at Martin Place and Central with direct connections to existing heavy rail lines.
Take a look below for our tips on integrating metro into your work commute.
Travelling from the Northwest or Lower North Shore
You no longer need to transfer to the T1/T9 line at Chatswood to get to the CBD. Sydney Metro is your fastest and most reliable way to get there. With services every 4 minutes in peak periods, travel times to the CBD are up to 18 minutes faster compared to the T1/T9 line from Chatswood. Time savings compared to driving could be even greater.
Connect to metro services via local buses, the T9 Northern Line at Epping, the T9 Gordon or T1 North Shore Lines at Chatswood or via Park and Ride1 at Tallawong, Kellyville, Bella Vista, Hills Showground and Cherrybrook. 1 Subject to availability.
Commuters who typically travel by car on the Warringah Freeway now have the option of integrating Sydney Metro City line’s fast and frequent connections to the CBD into their trip to work, which could mean a smoother and more cost-effective trip.
Travelling from the Eastern Suburbs
If travelling in via the T4 Eastern line, you can transfer to the M1 at Martin Place from which it is only a:
- 2 minute trip to Barangaroo Station. The total trip time from leaving the platform at Bondi Junction to arriving at Barangaroo Station will only be 15 minutes during peak periods.
- 5 minute trip to Victoria Cross Station or a 7 minute trip to Crows Nest. The total trip time from leaving the platform at Bondi Junction to arriving at Victoria Cross Station will only be 17 minutes during peak periods. To Crows Nest it will be 19 minutes which represents a nearly 20 minute saving on the current public transport journey time.
- 20 minute trip to Macquarie Park. This will provide a travel saving of over 10 minutes compared to taking the T1/T9 line from Town Hall Station to catch the Metro from Chatswood.
If travelling in via the Light Rail or Sydney Bus network you can connect with metro services at Central, Gadigal or Martin Place Stations.
Travelling from the South or West of Sydney
If coming from the T8 South, T3 Liverpool / Lidcombe or T4 Illawarra / Cronulla lines, transfer at Sydenham for an M1 service and onto:
- Central in 7 minutes
- Gadigal (Pitt St) in 9 minutes
- Martin Place in 11 minutes
- Barangaroo in 13 minutes
- Victoria Cross (North Sydney) in 16 minutes
- Chatswood in 22 minutes
- Macquarie Park in 31 minutes
- Bella Vista in 52 minutes
M1 services are on average nearly twice as frequent from Sydenham during peak periods.
If travelling from the T1 Western, T2, T3, T8 Airport or T9 Northern lines, change to the M1 at Central from where you can travel to:
- Gadigal (Pitt St) in 2 minutes
- Martin Place in 4 minutes
- Barangaroo in 6 minutes
- Victoria Cross (North Sydney) in 9 minutes
- Chatswood in 15 minutes
- Macquarie Park in 24 minutes 1,2
- Bella Vista in 45 minutes 2
1 For comparison, this represents a travel saving of around 15 minutes compared to taking the T1/T9 line from one of the CBD stations to catch the Metro from Chatswood
2 Some Western Sydney commuters might have a faster trip by transferring to metro services at Epping via the T9 Northern Line from Strathfield, or via local buses
If travelling in via the L1 Light Rail or Sydney Bus network you can connect with metro services at Central, Gadigal or Martin Place Stations.
Sydenham to Bankstown
In addition to the opening of the Chatswood to Sydenham section, the final stage of the City & Southwest project involves converting the existing T3 Bankstown train line to Metro standards so Metro services can run from Tallawong in Sydney’s north-west all the way to Bankstown via the CBD every four minutes during the peak from 2025.
This means that commuters from the southwest of Sydney will be able to enjoy the same benefits. You can find out how long your future Metro trip from the southwest will take using the travel calculator also.
Further information, including how we will keep you moving during the conversion of the T3 Bankstown line can be found here.
