Parramatta Light Rail achieves 100% track completion

Stage 1 of the Parramatta Light Rail team has completed the installation of two-way track along the new 12-kilometre alignment, marking an exciting milestone for both the project and community.

Track installation commenced at Westmead on 11 November 2020, with the final section of track completed at Tramway Avenue in Parramatta in May.

The project used around 1250 tonnes of reinforcing steel, 3300 ‘aluminothermic’ welds, and 18,000 cubic metres of concrete in the construction and installation of track along the whole alignment.

For over a year and half, the project engaged around 600 workers each day and 100 workers each night to build the light rail track network, which features traditional concrete track, ballasted track as well as ‘green track’, which features grass and/or groundcover between and beside the rails.

Thank you to local residents, businesses and stakeholders who demonstrated patience, understanding and support, and who continue to do so, as the team works hard to deliver one of the NSW Government’s major infrastructure projects to serve a growing Sydney.

With track installation complete, the team is focusing on landscaping and tree planting, as well as road, kerb and gutter, and footpath paving works.

Stage 1 of the Parramatta Light Rail will connect Westmead to Carlingford via the Parramatta CBD and Camellia, and is expected to commence passenger services in 2023.
