Australia Day long weekend traffic and trackwork travel advice

Motorists and passengers are advised of changed traffic and travel conditions across Greater Sydney due to maintenance, project works and major events.

Metro – updated advice

Services on the M1 Northwest & Bankstown line will now run to a weekend and public holiday timetable from Saturday 25 to Monday 27 of January.

Southwest Link

Southwest Link buses will not operate over the long weekend. Passengers between Sydenham and Bankstown will instead be serviced by the following bus routes:

  • 35T3: Bankstown then all stations to Sydenham, then St Peters, Erskineville, Redfern and then Central and return
  • 24T3: Bankstown then all stations to Belmore, then Lewisham then express to Central and return
  • 78T3: Campsie, Canterbury, Lewisham then express to Central and return.

Trackwork

  • T2 Leppington & Inner West and T5 Cumberland Lines – From 2am Saturday to 6am Monday, buses replace trains between Cabramatta and Granville. T2 Leppington & Inner West trains run between Leppington and the City via Regents Park, T5 Cumberland trains run between Schofields and Olympic Park.
  • T3 Liverpool & Inner West – T3 trains will not run. T2 Leppington & Inner West trains will run between Leppington and the City via Regents Park.
  • T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra and South Coast Lines – Buses replace trains between Hurstville and Central on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Trains run between Waterfall, Cronulla and Hurstville and between Central and Bondi Junction. South Coast Line trains run to Waterfall only.
  • T8 Airport & South Line – On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, buses will replace trains between Sydenham and Central. Trains will run between Macarthur, Revesby and the City via the airport.

Trains may run to a changed timetable and stopping pattern. Passengers are encouraged to allow extra time and plan ahead by visiting transportnsw.info/alerts or using trip planning apps.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

Up to five lanes on the Sydney Harbour Bridge deck will close for maintenance and upgrade works from tonight:

  • Friday 24 January: 9:30pm – 6am (up to three lanes)
  • Saturday 25 January: 9:30pm – 6am (up to three lanes)
  • Sunday 26 January: 7.30pm – 10.30pm (up to two lanes)
  • Tuesday 28 January: 9pm – 5am (up to four lanes)
  • Wednesday 29 January: 9pm – 5am (up to five lanes)
  • Thursday 30 January: 9.30pm – 5am (up to five lanes)

In addition, there is an ongoing closure of Lane 4 of the Sydney Harbour Bridge for Warringah Freeway Upgrade works until 5am on Tuesday 28 January. The lane will re-open temporarily today, Friday January 24, from 2.30pm – 7pm then close again until Tuesday morning.

Motorists can use other lanes on the Sydney Harbour Bridge or drive through the Sydney Harbour Tunnel as an alternative route.

Warringah Freeway Upgrade

Motorists are advised of changed traffic conditions on the Warringah Freeway this weekend and over the school holidays. Multiple temporary lane and ramp closures will be in place until 5am Tuesday 28 January, with reduced capacity on the Warringah Freeway northbound and southbound.

Cahill Expressway

Motorists are advised that the Cahill Expressway will be closed in both directions from 7.30pm –10.30pm on Sunday 26 January while Australia Day Live is taking place in Circular Quay. All on ramps will be closed including from the Warringah Fwy, Mount St and High St, and the Domain Tunnel and Macquarie St.

Sydney Light Rail

  • Between 11.15am and 1.30pm on Sunday 26 January, L1, L2 and L3 services will be affected due to a planned Police Operation protest from Central to Camperdown. Passengers should allow extra travel time and listen to announcements and directions from staff.
  • From 7.30pm to 10.30pm on Sunday 26 January, L2 Randwick Line and L3 Kingsford Line light rail services will not run between Circular Quay and Town Hall, due to road closures in the city for Australia Day and for the safety of crowds. Details here.
  • From Monday 27 January to Wednesday 29 January, nightly from 8pm to 1am, L1 Dulwich Hill Line light rail services will not run due to planned trackwork and maintenance works. Details, including replacement bus services, here.

Major Events
 

Big Bash League, The Challenger: Sydney Sixers v Sydney Thunder: More than 40,000 fans are expected to see the Sixers’ clash against the Thunder tonight at the SCG in Moore Park. Fans are urged to catch public transport as parking capacity is limited and heavy traffic is expected during the busy evening peak. Travel on transport is included in match tickets, and extra light rail services will run to and from Moore Park. Fans who need to drive should plan to arrive early as parking will fill quickly.
