Greater Sydney Traffic and Trackwork - From 14 March

Motorists and passengers are advised of changed traffic and travel conditions across Greater Sydney due to maintenance, project works, and major events.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

Up to five lanes on the Sydney Harbour Bridge deck will close for maintenance and upgrade works from tonight: 

  • Friday 14 March: 9.30pm – 6am (five lanes) 
  • Saturday 15 March: 9.30pm – 6am (five lanes)
  • Sunday 16 March: 9pm – 5am (five lanes)
  • Monday 17 March: 9pm - 5am (four lanes)
  • Tuesday 18 March: 9pm – 5am (up to five lanes) 
  • Wednesday 19 March: 9pm – 5am (up to five lanes) 
  • Thursday 20 March: 9.30pm – 5am (five lanes)

During the closures above, motorists can use other lanes on the Sydney Harbour Bridge or drive through the Sydney Harbour Tunnel as an alternative route, noting tunnel closures below.

Sydney Harbour Tunnel

The Sydney Harbour Tunnel will be partially closed at certain times over the next week.

  • Friday 14 March: 10.30pm – 6am (one northbound lane) 
  • Saturday 15 March: 10.30pm – 6am (one northbound lane) 
  • Monday 17 March: 10.30pm – 5am (one southbound lane)
  • Wednesday 19 March: 11pm – 5am (full northbound closure)

During these closures motorists can use available lanes on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. 

Warringah Freeway Upgrade 

Motorists are advised of changed traffic conditions on the Warringah Freeway

  • Miller Street southbound on ramp is closed continuously from 10am Friday 14 March to 6pm Saturday 15 March. Motorists can detour via Falcon Street southbound on ramp. 
  • Miller Street southbound on ramp will continue to be closed from 10am to 6pm weekdays until the end of April. Motorists are advised to use either the Ernest Street or the Falcon Street on ramp as an alternative. Motorists should check signage and follow the detour.   

M6 Stage 1

  • Motorists are advised of changed traffic conditions on President Avenue in Kogarah on Saturday, from 7am to 7pm. During this time, there will be lane closures and temporary “no stopping” zones on President Avenue while work continues installing signage and traffic management equipment.   • Motorists are advised of changed traffic conditions on West Botany Street in Rockdale from Tuesday 18 March. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction between French Street and the northern car park in Bicentennial Park for a period of up to 18 months. Please allow extra time and follow signs. Western Harbour Tunnel 

Motorists are advised of changed traffic conditions on City West Link and The Crescent (between M8 portals, James Craig Road and Johnston Street) from 9pm to 5am on Tuesday 18 March, Wednesday 19 March and Friday 21 March; weather permitting. For the latest traffic updates, download the Live Traffic NSW App or visit livetraffic.com

Essential Trackwork

  • City Circle – Trains run in one direction only, from Central first stop Museum. 
  • T2 Leppington & Inner West Line and T5 Cumberland Line – Buses replace trains between Leppington and Glenfield. T2 trains run between Macarthur and the City Circle via Granville, and between Campbelltown and Central via Regents Park. Most T5 trains runs between Schofields and Liverpool. 
    • Saturday 6:30am to 10:30am, Inner West trains run between Ashfield and the City Circle only.  
    • Sunday 5:30am to 9:40am, buses replace trains between Cabramatta and Granville. Trains run between Macarthur and the City via Regents Park, and between Richmond or Schofields and Olympic Park 
  • T8 Airport & South Line – Buses replace trains between Glenfield, Sydenham and Central via the Airport. Passengers should change at Central, not Wolli Creek, for trains to T4 or South Coast Line stations. 

Trackwork on other lines may also affect how you travel. Trains may run to a changed timetable and stopping pattern. Passengers may need to change trains to complete their journey, and are encouraged to allow extra travel time and plan ahead by visiting transportnsw.info/alerts or using trip planning apps. 

Major Events

St Patrick’s Day festival and parade, Sydney CBD: Thousands of people are expected to participate in and spectate the annual St Patrick's Day Parade as it travels along Pitt Street from Martin Place this Sunday at 11am, finishing at Circular Quay by 12pm. Roads will close in the Sydney CBD, Circular Quay and The Rocks between 10am and 12pm midday including sections of Pitt St, Hickson Rd, George St, Bridge St, Grosvenor St and other surrounding roads. Special event clearways will be in place on Pitt Street from 7am to 1pm. Motorists should expect delays while closures are in place and use detours. Some buses will be diverting and using different stops and routes while roads are closed. Visit Live Traffic NSW for details.

Sydney Streets in Glebe: City of Sydney’s Sydney Streets event will see Glebe Point Rd close this Saturday from 8am to 11.30pm. Special event clearways will also be in effect from 7am to 11.30pm. Motorists should check signs carefully to avoid being towed and allow extra travel time as delays are expected on roads in the area. Attendees should catch public transport with buses and light rail running regularly to Glebe. Visit Live Traffic NSW for details.

Ladies Day races Autumn Carnival, Rosehill: More than 5,000 people are expected to attend the Ladies Day Autumn Carnival races at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse this Saturday. Travel on public transport is included in race day tickets and extra L4 Parramatta Light rail services will run to and from Rosehill to help attendees get there and home again. Lakemba Nights during Ramadan: the Lakemba Nights markets are underway each week from Thursday to Sunday until 30 March. Attendees are encouraged to catch public transport as local parking is limited and traffic will be heavy with large crowds expected, particularly on weekends. Roads will be closed in Lakemba including Haldon St and The Boulevarde between 4pm and 4.30am each Thursday to Sunday during the event. Attendees are reminded that fare-free Southwest Link buses replace trains between Sydenham and Bankstown, running regularly to Lakemba.
