Kids step out for National Walk Safely to School Day

Primary school children across Australia will lace up their walking shoes and get stepping for National Walk Safely to School Day this Friday 16th May.

Marking its 26th year, National Walk Safely to School Day aims to encourage children to lead a healthier, more active lifestyle by including walking into their day.

Championed by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, the national initiative aims to raise awareness of the road safety, transport, and environmental benefits of regular walking or active transport – not just on the 16th May, but every day.

Harold Scruby, Pedestrian Council of Australia CEO, said regular walking was not only great for children’s physical health, but also had positive impacts on cognitive and academic performance.

“The best exercise for all Australians is walking regularly. Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. We should encourage them to take a walk before school, during and at the end of their day,” he said.

“Being active every day, including walking to school, can help make a difference for many Australians. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or carer - everyone has a role to play in helping children and young people to lead active healthy lives.”

Mr Scruby said children must hold an adult's hand when crossing the road until they are ten-years-old.
