Plan your Mardi Gras Parade night on public transport

After 16 days of performances, parties and events, the 2025 Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival will culminate in its annual parade this Saturday night – setting the streets of the CBD alive with colour and celebrations.

The hugely popular parade – with around 190 floats and almost 11,000 marchers – will attract tens of thousands of people into the city, and public transport is the stress-free way to get there.

More than 10 hours of major road closures will be implemented from 3.30pm along and surrounding the parade route, so revellers are strongly advised to leave the car at home and make use of hundreds of extra trains, buses, metro and light rail services.

Transport for NSW Acting Coordinator-General Grant Knoetze said the extra services would include numerous late-night options for getting home – but planning ahead is vital.

“On the way in it’s important to think about where you want to view the parade from so you can plan which station or stop is best to alight at,” Mr Knoetze said.

“For instance, as a pedestrian you won’t be able to cross Oxford Street or Flinders Street after 7pm ahead of the parade getting underway.

“Trains to the city will run frequently to bring crowds to the parade and spectators should use Town Hall, St James, Martin Place or Kings Cross stations – or Gadigal metro station - for access to the northern side of the parade in Darlinghurst, or Central for access to the southern side in Surry Hills.

“Be aware, Museum station will be closed from 5pm on Saturday until 4am on Sunday for crowd safety.

“Alternatively, for those viewing at Moore Park, catch L2 or L3 light rail services to Moore Park from the city or south-east.”

This is the first year that metro services to the city will be running during the parade - but due to essential trackwork, services will not run from Sydenham to Central, but from Central to Martin Place and Martin Place to Tallawong instead.

Passengers can use T4 trains between Sydenham and Central. Metro will have increased service frequency of every 8 minutes from 5pm – 12am, and services extended to run every 10 minutes from 12am – 2am early on Sunday morning.

Extra buses will run to the city throughout the afternoon, with additional late night services including NightRides to help parade-goers get home when trains and metro stop operating as well.

“Just remember if you’re catching the bus, services to and from the city will be using different routes and stops while roads are closed, so plan ahead - and you may need to walk further than usual for access to the parade viewing areas,” Mr Knoetze said.

“Likewise, while trackwork will not impact services through Central Station or the CBD this Saturday, passengers are urged to plan ahead to work out their best route.”

On the T8 Airport & South Line, T8 trains will not run between Sydenham and the City Circle. T4 trains will run between Sydenham and Bondi Junction, with some trains making extra stops at St Peters and Erskineville.

On the Central Coast & Newcastle Line, most trains will run between Central Coast & Newcastle Line stations and Strathfield only - change at Epping for metro services to the City or change trains at Strathfield to continue your journey.

Meanwhile most trains will run between Blue Mountains Line stations and Blacktown only - change trains at Blacktown to continue your journey.
