Plan ahead for travel across Greater Sydney this weekend - from 28 February

Motorists and passengers are advised of changed traffic and travel conditions across Greater Sydney due to maintenance, project works, and major events.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

Up to five lanes on the Sydney Harbour Bridge deck will close for maintenance and upgrade works from tonight:

  • Friday 28 February: 9.30pm – 7am (up to five lanes)
  • Saturday 1 March: 9.30pm – 6am (up to five lanes)
  • Sunday 2 March: 9pm – 5am (up to five lanes)
  • Monday 3 March: 9pm - 5am (five lanes)
  • Tuesday 4 March: 9pm – 5am (up to five lanes)
  • Wednesday 5 March: 9pm – 5am (four lanes)
  • Thursday 6 March: 9:30pm –5am (five lanes)

During the closures above, motorists can use other lanes on the Sydney Harbour Bridge or drive through the Sydney Harbour Tunnel as an alternative route, noting tunnel closures below.

Sydney Harbour Tunnel

The Sydney Harbour Tunnel will be partially closed at certain times over the next week.

  • Friday 28 February: 10.30pm – 6am (one northbound lane)
  • Wednesday 5 March: 11pm – 5am (full northbound closure)

Motorists are advised to use the Sydney Harbour Bridge if travelling northbound on Wednesday night.

Warringah Freeway Upgrade

Motorists are advised of major traffic changes along the Warringah Freeway this weekend.

  • Falcon Street northbound off ramp will be closed from 9.30pm Friday 28 February to 7am Saturday 1 March and 9.30pm Saturday 1 March to 5am Sunday 2 March 2025 (Saturday night contingency only). Detour via Pacific Highway or Miller Street.
    • for Gore Hill Freeway and M1, motorists heading north on the Sydney Harbour Bridge must use lane 4.
  • Temporary change to freeway access to Ernest Street southbound on ramp from 5pm Saturday 1 March to 5pm Sunday 2 March 2025
    • the right turn from Ernest Street (eastbound) to the southbound on ramp will be temporarily closed. Detour via Miller Street southbound on ramp or Falcon Street southbound on ramp.

Essential Trackwork

  • City Circle – On Sunday from 2am to 4pm, trains will not run on the City Circle, or between Central and Wynyard. For travel around the city, use the light rail or local bus services
  • T1 North Shore Line – Trains run to a changed timetable between Berowra and Wynyard only on Sunday from 2am to 4pm. If travelling to the city, use metro services, or change at Wynyard for light rail or local bus services
  • T1 Western Line, T9 Northern Line, Blue Mountains Line, Central Coast & Newcastle Line – Sunday from 2am to 4pm, buses replace trains between Strathfield and Central
    • T1 Western Line trains run between Penrith, Lidcombe and Ashfield only
    • T9 trains run to a changed timetable between Hornsby and Strathfield.
  • T2 Leppington & Inner West Line and T3 Liverpool & Inner West Line – On Sunday from 2am to 4pm, buses replace trains between Ashfield and Central
    • T2 trains run to a changed timetable between Leppington and Olympic Park via Granville
    • T3 trains continue to run between Liverpool and Lidcombe only. Change trains at Lidcombe to continue your journey.
  • T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line and South Coast Line – On Sunday from 4am to 8am, buses replace trains between Hurstville and Central.
  • T8 Airport & South Line – T8 trains do not run between Sydenham and the City Circle all weekend. On Sunday from 2am to 8am, buses also replace trains between Sydenham and Central. From 2am to 4pm, trains run between Macarthur and Central via the Airport.
  • Blue Mountains Line - Monday to Friday, buses replace trains between Lithgow and Mount Victoria. On Saturday, most trains run between Blue Mountains Line stations and Blacktown only. On Sunday from 2am to 4pm, buses replace trains between Strathfield and Central.
  • Central Coast & Newcastle Line – Most trains run between Central Coast & Newcastle Line stations and Strathfield only all weekend. Sunday from 2am to 4pm, buses replace trains between Strathfield and Central.
  • Sydney Metro – the M1 Northwest & Bankstown line will shut between Central and Sydenham station from 10pm Friday 28 February to first services on Tuesday 4 March. During this possession, the M1 Line will operate from Central to Martin Place and Martin Place to Tallawong. This shutdown is essential to completing critical overhead wiring connections for the new Southwest Metro line. On Saturday 1 March between 5pm to midnight, metro trains will run every 8 minutes to assist with transporting crowds for Mardi Gras. On Monday 3 March, metro trains will run at a reduced frequency with a train every 8 minutes between 7am to 7pm. At all other times during this period, metro trains will run every 10 minutes.

Trackwork on other lines may affect how you travel. Trains may run to a changed timetable and stopping pattern. Passengers may need to change trains, catch bus or light rail to complete their journey, and are encouraged to allow extra travel time and plan ahead by visiting transportnsw.info/alerts or using trip planning apps.

Major Events

Sydney Mardi Gras Parade 

Major roads will be closed, and widespread special event clearways will be in effect this Saturday for the annual Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade travelling along Oxford St, Flinders St and Anzac Pde. Spectators are urged to catch public transport with plenty of extra services running.

Lakemba Nights during Ramadan 

The Lakemba Nights markets are underway each week from Thursday to Sunday until 30 March. Attendees are encouraged to catch public transport as local parking is limited and traffic will be heavy with large crowds expected, particularly on weekends. Roads will be closed in Lakemba including Haldon St and The Boulevarde between 4pm and 4.30am each Thursday to Sunday during the event. Attendees are reminded that fare free Southwest Link buses replace trains between Sydenham and Bankstown, running regularly to Lakemba. While roads are closed buses will use different stops near Lakemba Station.

Green Day and Kylie Minogue concerts 

Sydney Olympic Park will be busy on Monday night with around 50,000 fans attending the Green Day concert at ENGIE Stadium and Kylie Minogue’s last Sydney concert at Qudos Bank Arena on the same night. Attendees are encouraged to catch public transport. Travel on all modes of transport is included in tickets to Green Day. Those attending Kylie Minogue’s concert need to tap on and off transport services using Opal or contactless payments. Some additional trains will run. Traffic is expected to be heavy during the busy weeknight peak, so those driving should allow plenty of extra travel time and have pre-booked parking.
