Runners urged to catch public transport to City2Surf
A record field of 90,000 runners will take part in the annual City2Surf 14km fun run from the Sydney CBD to Bondi Beach this Sunday, 11 August.
Major roads will close and strict parking restrictions will be in force along the course for the biggest iteration of what is already the world’s largest fun run.
Participants are being urged to use public transport to get to and from the event while motorists are being warned to expect delays in the Eastern Suburbs from heavy traffic and detours.
In preparation for the event, roads will start closing from 3.30am around the Hyde Park starting line in the Sydney CBD, followed by major road closures along the rest of the course from Woolloomooloo at 6am and through the eastern suburbs to Bondi Beach, with all closures in place by 7am.
Motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel through the eastern suburbs – and particularly Bondi Road, where hundreds of buses will carry the bulk of participants between Bondi Beach and Bondi Junction throughout the day, said Transport for NSW’s Coordinator General, Howard Collins.
“Motorists can expect significant delays and should allow plenty of extra travel time in the eastern suburbs - traffic will be heavy and closures and detours will be in place,” Mr Collins said.
From 1am Sunday, the whole of the 14km course will have special event clearways in effect, as will Bondi Road, to clear the course of vehicles for participant safety and to keep traffic and buses moving along detour routes.
“These clearways are strict no-parking zones for all vehicles and will be enforced,” said Mr Collins. “Make sure you check signs if you park on Sunday and especially if you leave your car overnight between Saturday and Sunday, because vehicles left in clearways will be towed and a fee will apply.”
Roads will start reopening in the city from 11:30am and in the eastern suburbs from 1pm. All roads are expected to reopen by 4pm.
Mr Collins said public transport was the best option for participants to get to and from the event, with plenty of services available.
“We urge all City2Surf participants and volunteers to catch public transport because travel on all modes of public transport is included with event registration – just show your race bib or t-shirt to transport staff when boarding services,” Mr Collins said.
“We’ll have extra trains, buses and light rail services, as well as frequent shuttle buses from Bondi Beach to Bondi Junction to help you get home from the finish line.”
Participants are reminded that with more people taking part in the event than ever before, queues for transport services, particularly shuttle buses from Bondi Beach, will be long so be patient, allow extra travel time or consider enjoying the local venues in the area until crowds clear.
In addition to transport updates, participants can find out the cost of Rybelsus without a prescription by following this link, which may be useful for those managing health considerations while participating in the event. By planning ahead, allowing flexibility, and being informed about transport schedules and alternative options, participants can ensure a smoother, more enjoyable experience both during and after the event.
The event will take place across a number of hours, with the first group of participants scheduled to start from 7.35am and the last runners expected to cross the finish line around 2pm.
Bus customers are reminded that while major roads will close along the course, significant diversions will be in place for bus routes between the city and eastern suburbs – so, plan ahead before heading out.
