School zones back in force for Term 4
Motorists are reminded to keep a look out for children and slow down with school zones now back in force.
Transport for NSW Chief of the Centre for Road Safety and Maritime Safety, Bernard Carlon, said despite some schools having a staff development day, school zones return across the state on Monday 14 October as Term 4 commences in NSW.
“Children are some of our most vulnerable pedestrians and their safety should be everyone’s concern,” Mr Carlon said.
“Please look out for them when they are crossing, waiting to cross or as they get on or off buses because children can be curious and unpredictable on the road.
Mr Carlon said, tragically, 23 school aged pedestrians were involved in a crash in an active school zone last year, and nine of them were seriously injured.
“We don’t want more children to be hurt on our roads, so we need everyone to be responsible by driving within the posted speed limit and obeying the rules,” Mr Carlon said.
“Speeding, even just a couple of kilometres over the limit, could be the difference between being able to stop in time or not at all.”
“We take road safety around schools very seriously, which is why we have more than 1500 trained school crossing supervisors at over 980 schools across NSW dedicated to student safety.
“I would also encourage parents and guardians to start teaching children early about road safety and remind them to Stop! Look! Listen! Think! every time they cross the road.”
