Stay alert and slow down as school holidays wind down

Motorists should allow extra travel time and plan ahead with heavy traffic expected at known traffic pinch points throughout NSW and major roads leading into Sydney as the school holidays come to a close.

Transport for NSW Acting Chief Customer Officer Roger Weeks said congestion and delays are expected on the Pacific Highway, the M1 to the north, the Great Western Highway through the Blue Mountains in the west and the Hume and Princes Highways to the south.

Southbound traffic on the Pacific Highway at Hexham is also likely to be busiest on Friday 26 April with delays of up to 15 minutes.

The Great Western Highway heading westbound will be busiest on Saturday 27 April with delays of up to 20 minutes expected.

“Please allow extra time to get to your destination and pack plenty of patience,” Mr Weeks said.

“Avoiding peak times can help you end your holiday in a positive way. We will be monitoring traffic at known pinch points and implementing arrangements as required, but motorists should still prepare for delays.

“With more people on the road, it is really important drivers stick to the speed limit and make sure they’re well rested.

“If you feel tired while driving or experience any of the early warning signs of fatigue such as yawning, restlessness or sore eyes, pull over in a safe place, stretch your legs and have a rest,” Mr Weeks said.

A reminder, double demerits remain in place until midnight on Sunday 28 April for all speeding, seatbelt, helmet, and mobile phone offences.

People travelling between Grafton and Inverell should take note of road closures due to the ‘Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic’ on Saturday 27 April.

Motorists are advised to consider using one of the alternate east-west corridors such as Oxley Highway, Bruxner Highway or Waterfall Way. More details about road impacts are available at Live Traffic NSW

Motorists should also expect delays and allow extra travel time on the Warringah Freeway from 10:00pm Friday until 4:30am on Monday as road work is undertaken in North Sydney as part of the Warringah Freeway Upgrade.
