Temporary closure of Alfred St off ramp from 22 November for next phase of Warringah Freeway Upgrade

To speed up work on the construction of the new Alfred Street off ramp structure and reduce impacts on local communities, Transport for NSW will temporarily close access from the Warringah Freeway later this month (November 2024).

Motorists and residents are advised the temporary closure of both the off-ramp and southbound access to Alfred Street North from Kurraba Road to Mount Street will begin from 10pm Friday 22 November and last until mid-2025.

Transport for NSW Deputy Secretary of Infrastructure and Place Camilla Drover says that while the temporary closure will be inconvenient for many, especially locals, it means this part of the work will be finished earlier than originally planned.

“The temporary closure will remove the need for up to 90 nights of noisy work, by making it possible to safely complete these works during the day. It will also remove the need for 10 weekends of extended hours work.”

Before the temporary closure begins, Transport is reaching out to residents in North Sydney and Neutral Bay to seek feedback on their use of the ramp and freeway, so appropriate mitigation measures can be developed for those that will be most impacted.

“We are very conscious of the impact the project is having on the local community. This will allow us to finish building the new Alfred Street off ramp, Falcon Street bus ramp and retaining walls six months earlier than previously planned,” Ms Drover said.

During the closure, all traffic travelling to Alfred Street North, Whaling Road and High Street via the Alfred Street off ramp will be required to use alternative routes.

Access for general motorists to North Sydney, Kirribilli and Neutral Bay will be maintained via Pacific Highway.

While southbound access on Alfred Street North from Kurraba Road to Mount Street is temporarily closed to all traffic (pedestrian access will be maintained), alternative access to Clark Road and High Street will be via Kurraba Road.

“We acknowledge this closure will affect local residents and visitors to Kirribilli, North Sydney and Neutral Bay by adding time to their journeys, due to the required detours. We apologise for this inconvenience and thank them for their patience.”

“We will provide residents and visitors to the area with advanced warning of the closure, and clear signage will be in place to advise of the required detours” Ms Drover said.
